01. Introduction

In the global hospitality industry, where experiences and service define a brand, the success of a business depends heavily on one essential asset: its employees. Every memorable guest interaction, from a warm welcome at the front desk to a bedroom prepared with attention to detail & care to a custom dining experience, is driven by employees who are genuinely engaged and motivated, customer satisfaction is directly proportional to business success & need I say how important Employee Engagement and Retention are?

Employee engagement is more than job satisfaction or the attainment of mindfulness and workspace wellness; it is about a hierarchical association where representatives are dealt with easily and feel their input matters to support your goal. This provides engaged employees more incentive to go over and beyond for guests Ensuring a positive atmosphere that improves the overall experience. But, accomplishing the same level of participation in hospitality is difficult. To work in the hospitality industry it's required disappointment-free satisfaction and a healthy dose of resilience in high-pressure environments. So, it can be more of a challenging task to keep motivated employees in this industry without having proper HR strategies.

A well-known Luxury destination brand ABC Resort, on-property experiences have identified the unique challenges in its space, gained comprehensive knowledge about employee engagement across its portfolio of properties globally and deployed an outreach platform to address retention. ABC Resort harnesses HR practices based on sound proven theories to tailor them for the diverse workforce where employees feel enabled, supported and valued as a result. This HR focus drives employee satisfaction and loyalty once again, but it also helps create better guest experiences in a moral cycle that is good for both staff and guests.

This blog series highlights strategies that the HR team at ABC Resort has implemented to increase employee engagement and decrease turnover. Over the course of this series, we will explore widely recognized HR theories that underpin successful engagement programs, such as Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Social Exchange. We will explore all the elements of ABC Resort's HR strategy — from regular structured feedback mechanisms and recognition programs to career development and well-being initiatives. Based on my own experiences, every post will feature ways such practices reflect best practices / shown by the hospitality industry and how these apply to global perspectives.

At the end of this series, you will get to witness that ABC Resort truly walks like it talks when it comes to its people-first philosophy and the ideal guest experience. It combines conscious strategies, informed by solid theory with employees who feel motivated and esteemed to do their very best; guests are appreciated through well-thought-out programs that the whole organization benefits. By unpacking ABC Resort’s philosophy further in this blog series, we hope to encourage other hospitality professionals and HR practitioners (or students) to think about how radical employee engagement and retention tactics can contribute towards making guest experiences unforgettable.

  1. Agreed Jayanath. As noted, when employees are engaged, they are more likely to go above and beyond in their roles, which directly improves guest satisfaction and the overall success of the business. Kular et al. (2008), ABC Resort’s focus on strategies like structured feedback, recognition programs, and career development initiatives clearly demonstrates how effective HR practices can foster an environment where employees feel valued and motivated to contribute to exceptional guest experiences.
