03. The Role of Feedback in Building Engagement
The Importance of Feedback for Engagement
Now, imagine working really hard on a project or task, ensuring everyone around you has everything they need, yet nobody ever acknowledges your effort or tells you how well you did. Without feedback, we don’t know if something was well done or could be improved,
and even less if we have felt valued or motivated. Feedback is an essential component of the employee experience; it guides, validates and creates
direction for employees.
Embedding employee feedback in the organizational model
contributes to employees feeling valued and connected at ABC Resort. Frequent,
constructive feedback establishes that their input is valuable and leaves
employees aware of how they are doing and where they can grow. It helps the
employees to improve and at the same time, it builds a healthy bond between
them and the organization by fostering an environment of transparency and
trust.
Theory in Practice: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
An understanding of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can help to give
perspective on the value of feedback. When we look at the focus of Maslow, explains a hierarchy of needs from basic physical and safe needs all the way up
to self-esteem and self-actualization. These higher psychological needs are
satisfied by using feedback.
At ABC Resort, continuous feedback always makes employees feel
appreciated and strengthens their belief in a stable job role. Encouragement
along with some constructive criticism helps to build their self-esteem (esteem
needs) and ensure that they feel part of the organization (social needs). The
truth is, when employees trust that their managers have a vested interest in
their growth and development; they feel a sense of purpose and acknowledgment
that fosters commitment to the organization. In the end, regular and valuable
feedback will drive employees towards self-actualization which means that they
will want to bring their best selves to work.
The ABC Resort story: Using feedback to increase the engagement
ABC Resort understands the importance of feedback in an HR process
and includes it to make sure that employees feel guided as well as appreciated.
Regular Surveys and One-on-One Meetings: ABC
Resort does regular surveys from the employees along with individual meetings.
These sessions are a formal means for employees to talk about their roles, work
environment or any hurdles they encounter. It not only gives the employees a
sense that they are important but also provides an opportunity for the
management to figure out areas to improve upon which eventually improves work
culture.
Closing the Loop: At ABC Resort, feedback doesn't stop at just
collecting it; managers make a promise to act on the feedback. If employees
vocalize issues within the organization or share ways things can be improved,
managers are required to address these concerns and make changes where
applicable. When ABC Resort undertakes initiatives in response to employee
feedback, it conveys that employees are truly heard by listening to team
members and following their advice while creating an organizational culture of
improvement by respecting each other.
Such proactive feedback cultivates a strong cycle of involvement, when employees feel valued and heard, they remain motivated to give their best. By acting on employee feedback, ABC Resort helps establish the trust that management and staff have in one another; it shows that rather than just collecting feedback, changes are being made based on this information.
In addition to consistent feedback, ABC Resort’s 360-degree recognition programs—the Organization provides Service Excellence Awards for team members receiving guest mentions in response to surveys, and the Employee of the Year award—reinforce the value of exceptional service. These programs guarantee that employees performing well in guest satisfaction are rewarded and celebrated, which also helps improve engagement and retention.

Agreed Jayanath. As Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs suggests, fulfilling an employee’s need for esteem and self-actualisation through continuous feedback not only helps improve performance but also fosters a deeper connection to the organization. By regularly gathering and acting on feedback, ABC Resort strengthens trust, encourages growth and ensures employees feel valued, ultimately enhancing engagement and retention (Maslow, 1943).

DeleteI really like how you highlighted ABC Resort’s feedback system, which not only values employees but actively listens to them. This approach truly creates a supportive workplace where employees feel seen and appreciated. alongside the regular surveys and one-on-one meetings, maybe ABC Resort could think about adding anonymous feedback channels. Sometimes people feel more comfortable sharing honest feedback this way, and it might help capture a fuller picture of employee sentiment. It’s also inspiring to see that ABC Resort doesn’t just gather feedback but actually acts on it. Closing the loop really shows employees their voices matter. It could be taken a step further with periodic ‘You Said, We Did’ updates, so employees see the specific changes made based on their suggestions. Overall, great insights into how feedback can strengthen engagement
